Arts festivals come and go.

In Adelaide they have been coming and going every two years – every year from 2013 – since 1960.

Two weeks of cultural feast, we used to say, struggling to digest dozens of concerts, plays, dance programmes, art exhibitions, writers’ week, followed by 102 weeks of famine.

From a relatively modest beginning in 1990, the Wangaratta Jazz festival grew rapidly in size and reputation, and was soon acknowledged widely as Australia’s best and most important jazz festival. Through its second decade, the festival has had to survive several financial challenges, but continues to enjoy strong national and international recognition.

Over the last 22 years, the festival has presented many great jazz artists from the USA, including Betty Carter, Joe Zawinul, Dave Holland, David Murray, Dave Douglas, Steve Lacy, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Kurt Elling, Horace Tapscott, Barry Harris, Geri Allen, Oliver Lake and Gary Bartz. There have been important European artists, too, including Han Bennink, Tomasz Stanko, ICP Orchestra, Trevor Watts, Louis Sclavis, Esbjorn Svensson and Tord Gustavsen.

The one national funding program specifically directed to supporting festivals is Festivals Australia.

STATE OF FESTIVAL MARKET REPORT

The key drivers for attendance at music festivals are the acts and the line-up, to no-one’s great surprise. People are concerned about the rising costs of tickets but are happy to pay more for refreshments at festivals if it will help the environment.

Live music attendance is growing but consumers are more discerning about their attendance at festivals, according to Moshtix’s inaugural State of Festival Market Report.
