NSW Councils Excel in Arts & Culture

Councils from across New South Wales were recognised in this year's Local Government Arts & Culture Awards, presented by the Local Government and Shires Associations.
President of the Local Government Association of NSW, Cr Keith Rhoades AFSM, said "the 2012 Local Government Arts & Culture Awards were hotly contested with 116 entries across 23 categories and five themes, which focused on arts and culture leadership, development, participation, facilities and interdisciplinary projects."
"The successful councils are as diverse as their award-winning initiatives, showing that it doesn’t matter if you come from the country or the city, the coast or inland; culture and art are important to all communities,” said Cr Rhoades.
Among this years awards were:
- Cessnock City Council, Performing Arts Initiatives award for "April's Fool"
- Blacktown City Council, Aboriginal Arts and Cultural Development award for "The Blacktown Arm Band"
- Willoughby City Council: New Cultural Facility award for The Concourse
- Marrickville Council: Building Capacity of the Arts and Cultural Sector award for Council, Enduring Staff Contribution to Arts and Culture award for and its Manager of Culture and Recreation, Josephine Bennett
